Gymnastic Rings FAQ

What size gymnastic rings should I choose, 28 mm or 32 mm?

28 mm rings match the FIG competition standard and suit lighter grips or smaller hands. 32 mm rings give a thicker, more secure hold for general strength training and heavier loads. Xtenia offers 28 mm on both models, with 32 mm available as an option on the V2.

How high should I hang gymnastic rings?

For dips, support holds, and most calisthenics work, hang the rings so the bottom sits roughly level with your hip when standing beneath them, then shorten the straps for handstand or support work and lengthen them for ring rows or stretches. Allow at least 2.2 m of clearance above the mounting point.

Are wooden rings better than plastic for calisthenics?

Wood offers a warmer, more secure grip than plastic, especially once hands sweat, and it does not become slippery in the same way under load. Plastic rings are typically lighter and cheaper, but many calisthenics athletes prefer wood for training sessions with muscle ups, dips, and holds.

Can beginners use gymnastic rings?

Yes. Start with basic support holds and ring rows at a shortened strap length before progressing to dips or muscle up drills. The instability of rings compared to a fixed bar builds stabilizer strength gradually, so shorter, controlled sessions are more effective early on than long high rep sets.

How much weight can gymnastic rings hold?

Xtenia rings and straps are rated up to 300 kg combined load. Always check that your mounting point, whether a pull up rig, wall bracket, or ceiling anchor, is rated to the same or higher capacity, since the rings themselves are rarely the weak point in the setup.

Do I need a pull up bar to use gymnastic rings?

Rings can be hung from a pull up bar, a wall or ceiling mount, a sturdy tree branch, or a calisthenics rig, provided the anchor point can support the load. A pull up bar is the most common option at home, but any secure, rated anchor point works.
